Bite prevention

Alka K9 is passionate about bite prevention and safety around dogs.

 As many of the families who require our services have children and several of our private behavioral consultations derive from aggressive behaviors or dog bites, we recognize the need for simple and effective bite prevention training for children and adults!

How many times have we heard people say: “The dog bit out of the blue”? However, if we better understood canine behavior & communication as well as what situations & human behaviors can lead to dog bites, we would be better able to recognize the warning signals that our dogs offer us and prevent bites.

Dog bite statistics in Québec prove that there is a lot of room for improvement when it comes to dog bite education and prevention. According to the results of a survey conducted in 2010 by the firm Léger Marketing for AMVQ:

• There are an average of 164,000 bites annually in Quebec.

• More than a quarter of these are inflicted on children under 12 and, in 38% of cases, the biting dog is the family pet.

• Just over 9% of families with a dog say that at least one person has been bitten by it in the year preceding the survey.

• In 45.4% of cases, the bite(s) were serious enough to require the person bitten to seek medical attention.

Alka K9 offers presentations and public workshops of several different styles on dog bite prevention. We organize workshops, at home or in a, for children, parents, future parents and also give presentations to various community organizations and workplaces. We offer general workshops for families and workplaces on how to be safe with dogs.

Specialized workshops for future parents address how to prepare the pet for the arrival of the new baby and how to develop a healthy bond between the dog and the new baby.

These workshops emphasize a positive preventive approach and teach children, families and workers to:

• Identify canine communication.

• Understand why dogs bite.

• Modify the behavior of the dog and/or people to reduce the risk of bites.

• Recognize, manage and avoid dangerous situations.
